Frozen Ship Wasteland Expedition Checklist

Run through this list before every sortie so cold, hunger, and distance do not strand you away from the ship.

Expedition Checklist

Every wasteland trip in Frozen Ship is a bet against weather, inventory limits, and the clock. Use this checklist before you step off the ship and again at the halfway point. It assumes you already understand the day loop from Getting Started and that someone on board is covering essentials via crew management.

Pre-departure — ship side

  • Assign cover roles: confirm critical stations still staffed while you are away (cooking, repairs, Hope-sensitive tasks tied to manage Hope).
  • Check build queue: note whether a build priority project will finish during your absence and if it needs materials you are carrying.
  • Eat and warm up: leave with full warmth and satiety buffers if the game allows pre-buffs from ship meals.
  • Repair kit / tools: pack repair items for weapons and outerwear before durability drops mid-fight.
  • Navigation marker: pick a primary POI and a fallback return path visible in low visibility.
  • Trade intent: if heading toward a settlement route, skim trade for barter items worth their weight.

Gear and inventory

  • Primary weapon + spare ammo or charges suited to expected threats (roadmap updates may add hunting gear — recheck patch notes on the Early Access roadmap after updates).
  • Secondary tool for harvesting or breach actions without wasting gun resources.
  • Medical supplies for bleeding, frostbite, or stamina crashes.
  • Food and water for the round trip plus one extra segment if you detour.
  • Fuel / heat consumables if your build relies on portable warmth.
  • Light source for dusk transitions — night cold punishes unprepared captains.
  • Empty bag space for priority loot tiers (story items, rare crafting mats, trade goods).

Route planning

Frozen Ship’s procedural wasteland rewards disciplined routing over loot greed.

  1. Define success: one clear objective (rescue hook, resource node, faction contact) instead of three partial goals.
  2. Time box: set a hard turn-back moment at roughly sixty percent of your safe travel window.
  3. Weather read: if visibility drops or wind intensifies, shorten the loop — you can rerun a closer node tomorrow.
  4. Ship drift awareness: remember the ship moves; confirm how return navigation works in your current Early Access build so you are not chasing an old map pin.

Mid-expedition checkpoint

Pause at the turn-back point and ask:

  • Am I still above critical warmth and food?
  • Did I already pick up quest-critical items?
  • If I push forward, can I still return before night penalties exceed my supplies?
  • Would selling partial loot now via a nearby camp be smarter than risking death for extra weight?

If any answer is shaky, head home, offload at the ship, and extend the run after rest.

Return and debrief

  • Unload in priority order: quest items, perishables, bulk crafting mats.
  • Repair at ship facilities before logging off — leaving gear broken snowballs the next checklist.
  • Log discoveries mentally or in notes for the next route (blocked paths, faction hostility, rich nodes).
  • Adjust crew tasks based on what you brought back (kitchen, workshop, storage).
  • Check Hope impact: if the run failed, read manage Hope before chaining another expedition the same day.

Common failure patterns

One more POI: the extra crate is rarely worth a death march. Over-trading: heavy barter goods slow escape from ambushes — see trade for value density. Empty-handed returns: if you return with nothing, verify whether the objective was information-only; otherwise refine route choice using Review & Overview mechanics refreshers.

Hardware struggling on long outdoor sessions? Cross-check system requirements. Waiting for launch? Use prep wishlist instead. For official patch timing that might change stamina or encumbrance, follow release timeline and official links.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Should I use this checklist every run?

Yes for Early Access, when mechanics shift often. Once you internalize the loop, skim the mid-expedition checkpoint only on risky routes or bad weather.

What if my crew is understaffed?

Delay long expeditions until [crew management](/crew/crew-management/) coverage is stable. A short gathering loop beats losing Hope because nobody maintained the galley.

How does this interact with trade routes?

Add trade goods only after combat and survival gear are secured. [Trade](/world/trade/) explains which items justify the weight.

Will hunting updates change the loadout?

The roadmap mentions weapons and hunting content. After those patches land, revisit the gear section alongside the [Early Access roadmap](/updates/early-access-roadmap/).
